Ho Chi Minh City is where Vietnam does business; Hanoi is where it decides how business is done. The ministries are here, and the north's electronics belt, from Bac Ninh out to Hai Phong, has become one of the biggest manufacturing stories in Asia. If your plans involve policy, licences or factories in the north, Hanoi is the trip. Here is how to do it well in three days.
Where should I stay in Hanoi for a business trip?
Around Hoan Kiem Lake if your meetings are in the old centre, the French Quarter or near the ministries; around West Lake for a quieter base; and in the western business district around My Dinh and Cau Giay if your partners are in the newer office towers.
| Area | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hoan Kiem and the French Quarter | Ministries, embassies, classic hotels, dinners | Busy, narrow streets in the Old Quarter |
| West Lake (Tay Ho) | Calm, lake views, international restaurants | 20 to 30 minutes to the centre |
| Western business district (My Dinh, Cau Giay) | Office towers, convention centre, newer hotels | Less atmosphere; 30 to 45 minutes to the old centre |
Hanoi reorganised its districts into wards in 2025. Locals still use the old area names, and so do we.
How long do drives take in and around Hanoi?
Allow 45 to 60 minutes from Noi Bai airport to the centre, 20 to 45 minutes across town, about an hour to Bac Ninh's industrial parks and about two hours to Hai Phong. Rush hours, roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:30 to 19:00, add a lot.
| Route | Typical drive |
|---|---|
| Noi Bai airport to Hoan Kiem | 45–60 min |
| Hoan Kiem to the western business district | 30–45 min |
| Hanoi centre to Bac Ninh industrial parks | about 1 h |
| Hanoi centre to Hai Phong | about 2 h |
| Hanoi centre to Ha Long Bay | about 2.5 h |
Drive times are typical daytime estimates by private car. Motorbikes outnumber cars, so plan meetings with buffers rather than back to back.
Why does northern Vietnam matter for investors?
Because it is Vietnam's electronics and high-tech manufacturing hub. Bac Ninh alone reported 3,697 foreign-invested projects from 47 countries and about $51.5 billion of investment capital as of August 2026, and Hai Phong adds a deep-sea port and logistics.
Samsung's long-established plants made Bac Ninh famous, and a supplier network has grown around them, now reaching into semiconductors. Investment is also spreading to neighbouring provinces such as Hung Yen, Ninh Binh and Phu Tho. For the national picture, read Vietnam FDI in 2026.
What does a 3-day Hanoi business plan look like?
Day one in the city centre, day two out to an industrial park in Bac Ninh or Hai Phong, and day three for advisers and follow-ups. Keep two or three meetings a day, mornings first, and leave evenings for dinners, which matter in Vietnamese business.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive; requested meetings in the centre | Chamber of commerce or partner meeting | Dinner with a local contact |
| 2 | Drive to Bac Ninh or Hai Phong; park or factory visit | Second site or supplier meeting; drive back | Quiet evening, West Lake |
| 3 | Licensed legal and tax advisers | Follow-up meetings; free time in the Old Quarter | Fly out, or stay for Ha Long Bay |
If you also trade, the London open is at 14:00 or 15:00 Vietnam time depending on the season; keep that slot clear and use our forex hours in Vietnam converter.
When is the best time for a business trip to Hanoi?
October to early December and March to April, when the weather is mild and offices are at full pace. Summer is hot and humid with storms; January to early March is cool and grey, and the weeks around Tet, 4 to 10 February 2027, are closed for business.
Hanoi has real seasons, unlike the south. Pack a light jacket from December to February. Read Tet 2027 in Vietnam before you pick dates, and the best time to visit Vietnam for the full calendar.

How does Green Candle Journeys help on a Hanoi business trip?
We plan and run it: hotel, a car and driver for the whole stay, an interpreter, requested company introductions, industrial-park visits in Bac Ninh or Hai Phong, and introductions to licensed advisers. We don't give investment advice, and meetings are requested, not guaranteed.
- Before you fly: help with the e-visa and a briefing on business etiquette.
- On the ground: one coordinator, a driver who waits between meetings, and an interpreter in the room.
- After the meetings: a weekend on Ha Long Bay or in the mountains, if you want one.
- Comparing cities: many visitors pair Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City, two hours apart by air.
