Why do I trade from a Trung Nguyên café?
Because it gives me three things a trader needs in Vietnam: strong coffee, a calm table for hours, and the same quality in every city I work from. I became a proper coffeeholic here, and it is still where I sit when I open my charts.
The photo above is a normal afternoon. The dollar index on one side of the screen, my Vietnamese stock watchlist on the other, the phone face down, and a phin filter slowly dripping into the glass. A phin takes a few minutes. You can't hurry it, and you can't make it drip faster by staring at it. I find that a good habit to bring to a chart: set it up, then wait.
It also helps that the chain is everywhere I travel for work. Whether I'm in Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, I know what the coffee will taste like, and I don't lose the first hour of a trip looking for somewhere to sit.
What is Trung Nguyên, and why does it matter to visitors?
Trung Nguyên is a Vietnamese coffee company founded in 1996 in Buôn Ma Thuột, the heart of the Central Highlands coffee region. Its Trung Nguyên Legend cafés are a simple way to taste Vietnamese coffee done properly.
Vietnam is one of the world's biggest coffee producers, and most of what it grows is robusta: a bold, bitter bean with roughly twice the caffeine of arabica. That's why Vietnamese coffee hits harder than the flat white you drink at home, and why it's served with condensed milk or ice so often. A café that roasts and brews these beans well is the best introduction you can get, and much easier to find than a small roaster on a side street.
If coffee becomes more than a drink for you, Buôn Ma Thuột itself is worth a detour. Trung Nguyên runs the World Coffee Museum there, and the drive through the plantations is a different side of Vietnam. We can add it to a custom trip.
What should you order at a Vietnamese café?
Start with iced coffee with condensed milk if you are new to Vietnamese coffee, and move to black phin coffee once you know how strong it is. These are the orders I use, and they work at almost any café in the country.
| Order (Vietnamese) | What it is | When I drink it |
|---|---|---|
| cà phê phin đen nóng | Hot black coffee dripped through a phin | Before a session, when I need focus |
| cà phê đen đá | Black coffee over ice | Hot afternoons, waiting for London |
| cà phê sữa đá | Iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk | The one I order for first-time guests |
| bạc xỉu | Mostly milk with a little coffee | Late in the day, so I can still sleep |
| trà đá | Iced tea, often free or very cheap | Alongside the coffee, all day |
At Trung Nguyên Legend itself, the phin coffees are listed by their Sáng tạo number, each with an "energy" name, and the price climbs with the number up to Sáng tạo 8 at the top of the range. If you can't decide, tell the staff how strong you like it and let them pick.

Robusta is strong. If you trade New York in the evening, keep the strong cups for the afternoon and switch to bạc xỉu or tea after dinner.
Coffee is only half of it, of course. Our Vietnamese food guide for traders covers what to eat between sessions.
Is Trung Nguyên Legend good for working on a laptop?
In my experience, yes: the branches I use have proper tables, Wi-Fi and a calm room, and nobody rushes you after one coffee. But café Wi-Fi is never a trading connection, so bring your own backup.
- Seat: ask for a table near a power socket before you order. A wall seat also keeps your screen private.
- Connection: run your platform on a local SIM hotspot, not the café Wi-Fi. Our eSIM and SIM guide explains which networks to use.
- Timing: cafés are busiest at breakfast and after work. Early afternoon, before London opens, is usually the quietest stretch.
- Big nights: for NFP or a position you can't afford to lose, trade from a desk you've tested. Our guide to trading from Vietnam has the full setup.

Why do Vietnamese investors meet in cafés?
Because in Vietnam the café is the meeting room. Investors, founders and brokers meet over coffee rather than in offices, and the slow phin gives the conversation time to go somewhere.
When I meet friends who invest in Vietnamese stocks, we meet at Trung Nguyên. The local market trades in the morning and early afternoon, so by late afternoon people are free to talk about what moved, what they're watching and what they've heard. Much of what I learn about the local market comes from those tables, not from a screen.

If you are coming to Vietnam to look at the market yourself, expect the same. A first meeting often happens over coffee, it often runs longer than planned, and it's normal for the host to pay. Our guide to Vietnam business etiquette covers business cards, titles and who pays, and the Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi business-trip guides cover where meetings tend to happen.
For investors who want those meetings arranged for them, with the coffee, the drivers and the days off handled, that's what our Green Candle Luxury trips are for.
What coffee should you take home from Vietnam?
Ground coffee and a phin if you want to brew it the Vietnamese way at home, or instant sachets if you just want something quick at your desk. When I guide tours, this is why I take guests straight to Trung Nguyên: the quality is consistent and the shops are easy to find.
| Take home | Best for | My tip |
|---|---|---|
| Sáng tạo ground coffee (range 1 to 8) | Brewing with a phin at home | Ask staff to match the number to how strong you like it |
| A phin filter | Making the coffee properly | Cheap, light, and the gift people actually use |
| G7 instant coffee | The office, hotel rooms, travel | The 3-in-1 sachets are sweet; black versions exist too |
Ground coffee and sachets travel fine in checked luggage. Paying is easy by card or by QR at the counter; our guide to money in Vietnam covers cash, cards and QR payments.

The bottom line
Trung Nguyên Legend is where I trade, where I meet investor friends and where I send every guest who wants good Vietnamese coffee to take home. Order a phin, give it time, keep your own hotspot for the charts, and leave with a bag of coffee and a phin in your suitcase.
Next: where to stay and work in Da Nang, or a private business trip to Vietnam.
This is my own experience; nobody paid for this post. Café facilities vary by branch. Nothing here is financial advice.
